Springs Rescue Mission:

Come as you are

Janine celebrating her graduation from the HOPE Program, symbolizing her journey from homelessness to stable work and housing.

2019 has kicked off with a blustery start, bringing lots of snow and temperatures plunging to the single digits. While the freezing weather is a nuisance to some, it’s a matter of life and death to the neighbors in our community who struggle with homelessness. At Springs Rescue Mission, we want to make sure everyone has the opportunity to be warm and safe, away from the chill that has already cost neighbors their lives this year. That’s why all three of our shelters are low-barrier. But what exactly does “low-barrier” mean?Being a low-barrier shelter means we’ve made it a priority to remove many of the normal obstacles that would keep someone from seeking shelter. Guests don’t need to submit to a background check, have an I.D., or be sober to stay in our shelters. Instead, we say, “come as you are.”One of the most common reasons someone won’t seek shelter is because of their pet. We understand that their pet means the world to them and is often the only family they have left. We don’t want anyone to have to choose between their safety and their pet, so all of our shelters are equipped with kennels. When neighbors come on campus, they have many opportunities in front of them. Not only are life-saving shelters open to all, but hot, nutritious meals wait for them twice a day in the Samaritan’s Kitchen. Showers and laundry facilities are readily available to restore dignity. There are life-restoring services as well, with more than 25 partner agencies on campus to assist our guests with obtaining I.D. cards and documents, counseling on next steps, and helping them to find affordable housing. Our shelter guests also have the opportunity to join our Work Engagement Program to keep the shelters, resource center, and kitchen spotless. In fact, last year the guests worked almost 6,800 two-hour shifts to help care for the campus! Guests continually tell us how thankful they are for the ability to work, feel useful, and give back to the community.Lives are being restored daily on the Springs Rescue Mission campus. We see it every time a neighbor wakes up with a smile on their face, eats a delicious meal, or meets with a counselor. This is only possible through your faithful giving and prayers. Thank you for caring for those struggling with homelessness, poverty, and addiction.
