Springs Rescue Mission:

The Power of Prayer: a Lent devotional by Ta Phillips

Lent is a season of reflection — a time to walk in love and to meditate on how we as Christians can learn new ways to “Love Bigger.” To observe the 40 days of Lent, Springs Rescue Mission is sharing devotionals from local faith and community leaders. The theme of this series is the same as that of our organization: “Love Bigger.” These two words are meant to be a reminder of the endless love of God in our lives, as well as a charge to us as Christians to meditate on how we might reflect that love on our fellow man.

“Those who look to him are radiant; their faces are never covered with shame. This poor man called, and the Lord heard him; he saved him out of all his troubles.” – Psalm 34:5-6There are many ways to Love Bigger; and what may seem small to you may be big to someone who has never experienced affirmation or encouragement. A smile, a pat on the back, taking the time to help — even in a seemingly small way — might feel like big love for someone in desperate need of it.We're often too busy to take a moment, look around and say, “how can I come along side someone and show them God’s love?” In the hustle and bustle of our busy lives, the struggles others face escape us to a point of being blind to their needs. There were many days in my life as a single mother when I was given affirmation and encouragement, and the best gift of all: the prayers of my faithful, godly mother-in-law.“I’m praying for you and I’m praying for the children," she'd often tell me.I heard her say those words many times over the years. Her son and I were no longer married, but she knew the power of prayer — and she was committed to praying for us. I dismissed her words and answered, “pray for Billy Graham; I’m doing just fine.” That must have broken her heart. But she prayed and prayed, day after day. I tell you this because I am a product of those prayers and of the love behind them. She is in heaven now, but because of her strong faith and God’s love for me, she prayed me into the kingdom.

I am now a daughter of the King.

So I encourage you: Never quit praying for those who don't know Christ. Our prayers reach the Lord’s ears — and in His way, he hears and answers. Aren’t we so blessed by his love?

“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” – John 3:16

I'm so thankful for my dear mother-in-law for going before the throne and praying for me. Our reunion in heaven will be marvelous.Never dismiss the power of prayer. The Lord desires and expects us to offer it to one another — in comfort and compassion — and to follow through consistently. Prayer is not a small thing. To love someone is to pray for them. And that prayer is such an amazing way for us all to LOVE BIGGER. Ta Phillips is a congregant at Calvary Worship Center in Colorado Springs.
